Epic Summit Challenges Right in Our Backyard
For experienced hikers looking for a true Southern California test, the Inland Empire delivers some of the biggest elevation gains in the state — without leaving the region.
Cucamonga Peak via Icehouse Canyon is a classic hard day hike. The roughly 11–12 mile round trip climbs through forest and rocky terrain to a summit with unforgettable views across the San Gabriel Mountains and the valley below.
San Gorgonio Peak, the highest point in Southern California at 11,503 feet, offers multiple strenuous routes (including Vivian Creek). Expect 15–18+ miles and thousands of feet of elevation gain. Wilderness permits are required.
San Jacinto Peak (10,834 feet) can be approached from Idyllwild via the Marion Mountain Trail or combined with the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for a slightly more accessible (but still demanding) option. The famous Cactus to Clouds route remains one of the most extreme elevation gains in the United States.
These peaks sit in our own mountain ranges. You can leave early, summit, and return the same day — no overnight drive required. Always check current conditions, weather, and permit requirements. The Inland Empire Xperience event calendar often lists guided group hikes, trail races, and outdoor education events connected to these iconic summits.
