Hiking Joshua Tree National Park — Iconic Desert Trails Close to the IE
Joshua Tree National Park sits right on the edge of the Inland Empire experience. From most IE cities you can be at a trailhead in about 90 minutes to two hours — far closer than many people realize.
Easy starters
- Hidden Valley Trail (1-mile loop) – Classic rock formations and Joshua trees. Perfect introduction.
- Barker Dam (about 1.1 miles) – Short walk with water reflections, petroglyphs, and wildlife viewing.
- Keys View (0.2-mile accessible path) – Sweeping panorama of the Coachella Valley, Salton Sea, and San Jacinto.
Moderate favorites
- Ryan Mountain (3 miles round-trip, ~1,050 ft gain) – One of the most popular summits in the park with 360-degree views of both the Mojave and Colorado deserts. Outstanding at sunset.
- 49 Palms Oasis (3 miles round-trip) – Climb to a surprising desert oasis filled with fan palms.
Longer options Boy Scout Trail, Willow Hole, and Lost Palms Oasis reward those looking for more solitude and bigger days.
Joshua Tree delivers the full desert experience — towering rock piles, unique plants, big skies — without requiring an overnight road trip. Check the Inland Empire Xperience event calendar for any guided desert hikes, photography outings, or seasonal events connected to the park.
