Beginner-Friendly Hiking Trails You Can Reach in Minutes
You donβt need to drive hours or book a distant adventure to enjoy a great hike. Some of the best beginner trails in Southern California sit right here in the Inland Empire.
Mount Rubidoux in Riverside is the classic local favorite. The paved loop is roughly 2.8β3 miles with about 350 feet of elevation gain. It is stroller-friendly, dog-friendly, and open to almost any fitness level. From the top you get wide views of the Santa Ana River valley and, on clear days, the distant peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio.
North Etiwanda Preserve and Etiwanda Falls near Rancho Cucamonga offer a gentle introduction to the foothills. The trails wind through coastal sage scrub and lead to a refreshing seasonal waterfall.
Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve in Murrieta delivers open grassland, seasonal wildflowers, vernal pools, and historic adobe buildings on easy-to-moderate loops around 4β5 miles.
These trails prove you can get outside, get moving, and still be home for dinner. Check the Inland Empire Xperience event calendar for guided beginner walks, trail cleanups, and family nature days happening near you.
