California Theatre of the Performing Arts in San Bernardino
Located in downtown San Bernardino at 562 West 4th Street, the California Theatre of the Performing Arts is one of the Inland Empire’s most important historic venues. Opened in 1928 as a grand movie palace and vaudeville house, this Spanish Colonial-style theater continues to serve as a major center for live performances nearly a century later.
A Historic Landmark
Built as part of the Fox West Coast Theatres chain, the California Theatre opened on August 15, 1928, to great fanfare. Over the decades it hosted movies, vaudeville, and special screenings — including early test showings of classic films. After periods of change and restoration, the theater has remained a cultural anchor for San Bernardino.
In recent years the venue received a significant multi-million-dollar upgrade that improved seating, lighting, sound, the marquee, and other systems while preserving its historic character. One of its most treasured features is the original Mighty Wurlitzer organ, which still resides in the theater and is occasionally featured in special programs.
What You’ll See on Stage
The California Theatre presents a broad mix of live entertainment, including:
- National touring Broadway-style musicals and plays
- San Bernardino Symphony concerts (a longtime resident ensemble)
- Ballet and dance performances
- Children’s theater and educational shows
- Comedy, concerts, and special events
With a seating capacity of about 1,700, the theater offers a classic proscenium experience that feels more intimate than larger arenas while still accommodating major productions.
Dining Near the Theatre
Downtown San Bernardino and nearby areas provide several options for a pre- or post-show meal. Local favorites within a short drive include casual Mexican restaurants, cafes, kebab and Mediterranean spots, sushi, and American dining. For a wider selection, many patrons head toward Hospitality Lane or other nearby commercial areas for steakhouses, brewhouses, and additional choices.
