One of the most dramatic experiences in the region is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. In about 10 minutes, the rotating tram cars climb more than 8,500 feet from the desert floor into the cool pines of Mount San Jacinto State Park.

At the top you’ll find observation decks, hiking trails, restaurants, a natural history museum, and temperatures that are often 30–40 degrees cooler than the valley below. It’s ideal in summer for escaping the heat or in winter for a snowy mountain escape without a long drive.

Tickets are best purchased online in advance (timed entry helps avoid lines). Summer hours usually run later on weekends.

I.E. Xperience tip: Pair it with dinner in Palm Springs or a stop in the Coachella Valley for a full day trip.
