Family day: Alpine Zoo. Alpine Slide, Mineshaft Coaster, summer water slide, mini golf. Ski lessons at Snow Summit or a tube hill that needs no skill. Kayaks and pontoons off the Village. Alpine Pedal Path for bikes and strollers. Bowling Barn and the Discovery Center when weather turns.

Stay: a cabin with a kitchen. Campgrounds ring the lake.

Best for: the family that wants every mountain experience without changing towns.

Lake Arrowhead Villages

A mountain stay built around a village green instead of a ski ticket. The lake is pretty and mostly private. The trip is the boardwalk, the cabin, the Rim of the World pullout, and Santa’s Village in Skyforest.

Family day: a slow lap of the Village. Santa’s Village. Heaps Peak Arboretum. Sightseeing stops on Highways 18 and 330. Cabin-deck evening.

Stay: vacation cabins. Crestline is often the easier driveway in bad weather.

Best for: charm, short walks, a calmer village than Big Bear.

Running Springs, Arrowbear & Green Valley Lake

San Gorgonio & Forest Falls

Not Big Bear. No big lake, no major ski resort. A real village: galleries, a bookstore, a playground, granite walls that helped teach America how to grade a climb.

Family day: Idyllwild Nature Center. Downtown on foot. Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail. Look at Tahquitz from town. Cabin-deck stars.

Stay: cabins, small inns, forest campsites. No ski hotel. That is the point.

Best for: a town you can walk, and hikers who want granite over a lift line.

Palm Springs High Country

Family day: the tram is the activity. Desert View Trail. Snow play on top after a storm. Downtown when you come back down. Leave Cactus to Clouds off the kid itinerary.

Stay: Palm Springs. Day-trip the mountain.

Best for: one unforgettable mountain moment without giving up a city hotel.

Mount Baldy Village

Wrightwood

Best for: the close, low-key family snow day.
